Serves:
Ingredients
- 1 cup basmati rice
- 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 small onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
-
Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
-
In a large saucepan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, and sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
-
Add the cumin powder, coriander powder, and turmeric powder to the saucepan. Stir well to coat the onions and garlic with the spices.
-
Add the basmati rice to the saucepan and stir to combine with the onions and spices.
-
Pour in the vegetable or chicken broth and add salt to taste. Bring the mixture to a boil.
-
Once the mixture comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a lid, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the liquid is absorbed.
-
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
-
Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
