In this plantain recipe, you can simply recreate this street-food favorite at home using a simple beer batter and ripe plantains. Then serve it with some chocolate and caramel sauces for added sweetness!
Hawker-Style Plantain Fritters
This plantain recipe yields a plate of ripe and sweet plantains that are golden-fried intro crunchy fritters!
Ingredients
- 4 plantains, (roughly 5 ounces each), ripe, peeled, halved
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 5 cups vegetable oil, (up to 8 cups), for frying
For Batter:
- 11 oz beer, of your choice, very cold, or soda water
- 5 oz all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten
To Serve:
- 1 oz strawberry ice cream, or any ice cream of your choice, preferably vanilla-flavored, per serving
- 1 tbsp caramel sauce, per serving
- 1 tbsp chocolate sauce, per serving
Instructions

In a mixing bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Add the beaten egg and cold beer or soda water. Whisk until evenly incorporated with a few lumps in between.

Once done, dredge your plantains in cornstarch and then dip in the batter.

Preheat your oil in either a Dutch oven or deep skillet ready for deep frying. Deep fry plantains for roughly 5 to 7 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

Drain your fried plantains onto your prepared basket lined with paper towels. Repeat until you have fried all your plantains and drained them in this manner.

Drizzle with chocolate and caramel sauces. Serve immediately with ice cream on the side.
