- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup hot water
- Cooking spray
- for the chocolate icing:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

In a separate large bowl, combine the granulated sugar, vegetable oil, applesauce, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

Stir in the hot water to create a smooth batter.

Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
