How To Make Lighter Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Icing

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup hot water
  • Cooking spray
  • for the chocolate icing:
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  3. In a separate large bowl, combine the granulated sugar, vegetable oil, applesauce, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.

  5. Stir in the hot water to create a smooth batter.

  6. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top with a spatula.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

  8. Remove the cake from the oven and allow it to cool completely in the pan.

  9. Meanwhile, prepare the chocolate icing by whisking together the powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.

  10. Once the cake has cooled, gently remove it from the pan and transfer it to a serving plate.

  11. Drizzle the chocolate icing over the cake, spreading it evenly with the back of a spoon or a spatula.

  12. Slice and serve the lighter chocolate cake with chocolate icing.
