How To Make Bread Sauce
A creamy and flavorful sauce made from bread crumbs, perfect to serve alongside roast meats.
Serves:
Ingredients
- 4 slices of stale bread
- 2 cups of whole milk
- 1 onion, peeled and studded with cloves
- 1 bay leaf
- 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp of butter
Instructions
-
In a saucepan, add the milk, onion, bay leaf, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until the milk starts to steam, then remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes.
-
Meanwhile, tear the bread into small pieces and place in a blender or food processor. Pulse until it turns into coarse breadcrumbs.
-
Strain the milk mixture to remove the onion and bay leaf. Return the milk to the saucepan and bring it to a simmer.
-
Add the breadcrumbs to the simmering milk and stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.
-
Stir in the butter until melted and season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Remove from heat and let the sauce rest for a few minutes before serving.
