Enjoy after-meal desserts with this delicious cherry turnover recipe. These cherry turnovers are a rendition of my favorite classic cherry pies, but made even better with its triangular, hand-held size. It’s the perfect dessert to share at gatherings or bring as after-school snacks. That’s why I had fun making these for my family since my kids seem to enjoy these mini cherry dessert pies.
This homemade cherry pastry is so simple to make. You don’t have to worry about making your own puff pastry sheets, just buy the ready-made ones in the supermarket. That’s what I used for my cherry turnovers, and it saved me a lot of time. Just make sure that you thaw the frozen puff pastry sheets at room temperature before using it.
After buying the pastry sheets, the next step is to find good quality cherries. You’re lucky if you get to buy ripe and fresh cherries during cherry season. But, of course, you don’t have to wait that long! Just buy delicious sweet cherries at your nearest grocery store. I bought sweet and sour cherry combinations so the pie filling would taste extra delicious, especially when mixed with the sugar and cinnamon. You can even stir in a bit of almond extract or vanilla extract for added flavor and aroma. Or, add a tablespoon of cream cheese with the cherries for extra creaminess and tang.
Now comes the preparation part, it’s even easier than mixing the ingredients. Fill up the pastry sheets with the cherry pie filling. You then fold one corner to the opposite corner, and finally, brush the top with egg wash to achieve that golden brown crust finish. I sprinkled some decorating coarse sugar (you can even go for powdered sugar if you want) on top, then popped them in the oven!
Enjoy making easy pastry recipes with this hand-held sized cherry turnovers dessert! Eat them while they’re still warm to really experience the taste of the crispy crust combined with the oozing cherry filling. It’s a delicious cherry pastry turnover dessert that’s perfect for sharing and snacking!
