Apple cake is a traditional sweet dessert in Ireland. It is very similar to a simple spice cake with the addition of apples. The Irish apple cake would make a good treat for a St. Patrick’s Day party or just for a dessert on a winter’s night.
How To Make Irish Apple Cake
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg, beaten
- 4 granny smith apples, cored and diced
- 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, apples, walnuts and vanilla.

Sift in the dry ingredients and mix in well. Pour batter into a greased 8-inch square baking pan.

Bake until lightly brown and a skewer comes out clean from the center, for about 45 minutes.

Serve warm or cooled with whipped cream, custard or vanilla ice cream.
