Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 cup dried figs, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, cracked black pepper, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add the cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to cut it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Stir in the chopped figs.

  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the honey, buttermilk, and beaten egg.

  6. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.

  7. Transfer the dough to a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet and shape it into a round loaf.

  8. Use a sharp knife to score an “X” on the top of the loaf.

  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  10. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
